What Type of Shoe May Cause Hammertoe?

A condition known as hammertoe may often be the result of wearing shoes that do not fit correctly. The type of shoe that is typically worn, which causes this ailment to develop may have minimum arch support and is often too narrow. This generally causes the middle toes to have muscle imbalances, which prompts the toes to bend, and may be unable to straighten. Pain commonly affects patients with hammertoe and corns and calluses may develop on top of the affected toes. This may be a result of the toes rubbing against the shoes that are worn, in addition to the toes becoming swollen and inflamed. If you feel you are afflicted with hammertoe, it’s suggested to speak with a podiatrist as quickly as possible to learn about the correct course of action to treat this condition.

Hammertoe

Hammertoes can be a painful condition to live with. For more information, contact Dr. Harold Sterling from Michigan. Our doctor will answer any of your foot- and ankle-related questions.

Hammertoe is a foot deformity that affects the joints of the second, third, fourth, or fifth toes of your feet. It is a painful foot condition in which these toes curl and arch up, which can often lead to pain when wearing footwear.

Symptoms

  • Pain in the affected toes
  • Development of corns or calluses due to friction
  • Inflammation
  • Redness
  • Contracture of the toes

Causes

Genetics – People who are genetically predisposed to hammertoe are often more susceptible

Arthritis – Because arthritis affects the joints in your toes, further deformities stemming from arthritis can occur

Trauma – Direct trauma to the toes could potentially lead to hammertoe

Ill-fitting shoes – Undue pressure on the front of the toes from ill-fitting shoes can potentially lead to the development of hammertoe

Treatment

Orthotics – Custom made inserts can be used to help relieve pressure placed on the toes and therefore relieve some of the pain associated with it

Medications – Oral medications such as anti-inflammatories or NSAIDs could be used to treat the pain and inflammation hammertoes causes. Injections of corticosteroids are also sometimes used

Surgery – In more severe cases where the hammertoes have become more rigid, foot surgery is a potential option

How Falling May be Prevented

Research has shown the importance of developing muscle strength, which may aid in the prevention of falling. Strong muscles may help to maintain balance, and this may be achieved by incorporating walking into your daily routine, and eliminating sitting for extended periods of time. Steps may be taken to improve conditions in your home, including repairing broken steps, having brighter lighting or removing rugs that are loose. There are several hazards that may exist in the bathroom as a result of wet and slippery floors. It’s beneficial to use a non slip mat in the shower or bathtub in addition to utilizing a grab bar inside and outside of the shower. It’s important to have routine check-ups with your physician to monitor the condition of your eyes and ears, and this may bring more awareness to your immediate surroundings.

Preventing falls among the elderly is very important. If you are older and have fallen or fear that you are prone to falling, consult with Dr. Harold Sterling from Michigan. Our doctor will assess your condition and provide you with quality advice and care.

Every 11 seconds, an elderly American is being treated in an emergency room for a fall related injury. Falls are the leading cause of head and hip injuries for those 65 and older. Due to decreases in strength, balance, senses, and lack of awareness, elderly persons are very susceptible to falling. Thankfully, there are a number of things older persons can do to prevent falls.

How to Prevent Falls

Some effective methods that older persons can do to prevent falls include:

  • Enrolling in strength and balance exercise program to increase balance and strength
  • Periodically having your sight and hearing checked
  • Discuss any medications you have with a doctor to see if it increases the risk of falling
  • Clearing the house of falling hazards and installing devices like grab bars and railings
  • Utilizing a walker or cane
  • Wearing shoes that provide good support and cushioning
  • Talking to family members about falling and increasing awareness

Falling can be a traumatic and embarrassing experience for elderly persons; this can make them less willing to leave the house, and less willing to talk to someone about their fears of falling. Doing such things, however, will increase the likelihood of tripping or losing one’s balance. Knowing the causes of falling and how to prevent them is the best way to mitigate the risk of serious injury.

Causes of Bunions

If the joint on the bottom of the big toe is enlarged, this foot condition may be referred to as a bunion. There may be considerable inflammation, which can possibly lead to additional bone growth. Patients who experience bunions often have obvious symptoms including pain, redness and tenderness. If this condition is not treated promptly, arthritis may develop, and this may possibly cause a deformity. Common reasons for bunions to form may be from genetic traits or abnormal foot structures such as flat feet. Choosing to wear poorly fitting shoes may cause a preexisting case of bunions to become even worse. It’s important to speak with a podiatrist who can suggest specific exercises that may treat the symptoms of the bunion in addition to possible removal, which may require surgery.

If you are suffering from bunion pain, contact Dr. Harold Sterling of Michigan. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

What Is a Bunion?

Bunions are painful bony bumps that usually develop on the inside of the foot at the joint of the big toe. As the deformity increases over time, it may become painful to walk and wear shoes. Women are more likely to exacerbate existing bunions since they often wear tight, narrow shoes that shift their toes together. Bunion pain can be relieved by wearing wider shoes with enough room for the toes.

Causes

  • Genetics – some people inherit feet that are more prone to bunion development
  • Inflammatory Conditions - rheumatoid arthritis and polio may cause bunion development

Symptoms

  • Redness and inflammation
  • Pain and tenderness
  • Callus or corns on the bump
  • Restricted motion in the big toe

In order to diagnose your bunion, your podiatrist may ask about your medical history, symptoms, and general health. Your doctor might also order an x-ray to take a closer look at your feet. Nonsurgical treatment options include orthotics, padding, icing, changes in footwear, and medication. If nonsurgical treatments don’t alleviate your bunion pain, surgery may be necessary.

If you have any questions, please feel free to contact our office located in Lansing, MI. We offer the newest diagnostic and treatment technologies for all your foot care needs.

Can Obesity Affect My Child’s Feet?

Research has shown that a correlation exists between obesity and specific foot conditions. The plantar fascia may become inflamed as a result of the additional weight, and this may lead to developing the painful condition known as plantar fasciitis. When obesity affects children, balance may be compromised, the walking pace may be slower, and the feet may become wider and longer. Children who are overweight may experience damage to the ligaments and joints, which may lead to abnormalities in the feet. Many times, the excess weight will keep obese children from participating in physical activities despite knowing that it is one of the key factors in losing additional pounds. If your child shows signs of becoming obese, please consult with a podiatrist to learn more about how obesity affects the feet.

Obesity has become very problematic at this point in time and can have extremely negative effects on the feet. If you’re an obese individual and are concerned about your feet, contact Dr. Harold Sterling from Michigan. Our doctor can provide the care you need to keep you pain-free and on your feet.

Obesity and Your Feet

Since your feet are what support your entire weight when standing, any additional weight can result in pain and swelling. Being overweight is one of the main contributors to foot complications.

Problems & Complications

Extra Weight – Even putting on just a few extra pounds could create serious complications for your feet. As your weight increases, your balance and body will shift, creating new stresses on your feet. This uneven weight distribution can cause pain, even while doing the simplest tasks, such as walking.

Diabetes – People who are overweight are at serious risk of developing type-2 diabetes, which has a drastic impact on the health of your feet. As you get older, your diabetes might worsen, which could lead to loss of feeling in your feet, sores, and bruises. You could also become more prone to various infections.

Plantar fasciitis – Pressure and stress that is placed on muscles, joints, and tendons can trigger plantar fasciitis, which is an inflammation of tissue that forms along the bottom of the foot.

The feet are taken for granted by many people who may not be aware of simple steps that can be performed that may yield maximum benefits. When shoes fit properly with enough room for the toes to move about in, the feet will feel comfortable for the majority of the day. Washing the feet daily followed by utilizing a good moisturizer will help the skin to feel smooth, and may prevent a foot condition that is known as cracked heels. It’s imperative to properly trim the toenails, which is done by trimming straight across the nail, as this may prevent ingrown toenails from developing. Research has shown that when shoes are purchased, it’s beneficial to try them on in the middle of the day when the feet are at their largest. Additionally, the importance of changing your socks daily may eliminate certain foot odors. If you would like additional information on how to properly care for your feet, please consult with a podiatrist.

The Elderly and Their Feet

As we age we start to notice many changes in our body, but the elder population may not notice them right away. Medical conditions may prevent the elderly to take notice of their foot health right away. Poor vision is a lead contributor to not taking action for the elderly.

Common Conditions

  • Neuropathy – can reduce feeling in the feet and can hide many life-threatening medical conditions.
  • Reduced flexibility – prevents the ability of proper toenail trimming, and foot cleaning. If left untreated, it may lead to further medical issues.
  • Foot sores – amongst the older population can be serious before they are discovered. Some of the problematic conditions they may face are:
  • Gouging toenails affecting nearby toe
  • Shoes that don’t fit properly
  • Pressure sores
  • Loss of circulation in legs & feet
  • Edema & swelling of feet and ankles

Susceptible Infections

Diabetes and poor circulation can cause general loss of sensitivity over the years, turning a simple cut into a serious issue.
